Nambiti’s location in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands places it within 30 minutes of some of the most historically significant terrain in southern Africa. The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 was fought across the landscape that surrounds the reserve – and the sites of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift remain among the most moving and well-preserved battlefield landscapes in the world.
For international guests in particular, combining a Nambiti safari with a guided battlefield tour is one of the most rewarding itineraries available in KwaZulu-Natal. Wild Africa in the morning. Profound history in the afternoon.
The site of the British Army’s most significant defeat in the Anglo-Zulu War, 22 January 1879. The distinctive mountain and the white cairns marking where soldiers fell make this one of the most atmospheric battlefield sites in Africa. Guided tours available through specialist local operators and several Nambiti lodges.
The defence of Rorke’s Drift on 22 to 23 January 1879 resulted in the largest number of Victoria Crosses awarded for a single action in British military history. The site includes an excellent museum and interpretive centre. The building that served as the field hospital still stands.
The site of the December 1838 Battle of Blood River, 40 minutes from the reserve. A bronze monument of the Voortrekker laager marks the site on the Ncome River. The Ncome Museum on the opposite bank presents the Zulu perspective on the events of 1838.
The hill that gave its name to the terraces at Liverpool’s Anfield stadium. The Battle of Spioenkop in January 1900 was one of the bloodiest engagements of the Anglo-Boer War. The battlefield and dam nature reserve are 45 minutes from Nambiti.
Specialist battlefield guides offer a depth of knowledge – historical, cultural, and personal – that transforms these sites from landscape into story. Several Nambiti lodges can arrange battlefield tours directly; guests can also book independently through established local operators.
Half-day and full-day tours are available. Most combine naturally with a morning game drive for a full day’s itinerary.
